Hi! Welcome to the revamped Front-end Newsletter.

You’ll notice it has a new name, so I thought I’d provide an explanation. Versioning is a daily newsletter that covers a different subject every day of the week. On Mondays and Thursdays the newsletter will cover all things Front-end. Other days will see coverage of other subjects: Back-end dev, Design and DevOps.

Since you’re subscribed to the Front-end Newsletter, you’re on the list to get this email today and on Thursday. But if you’re keen on getting the full range of coverage, sign up for Versioning here.

Enough preamble, let’s get into it!

Swupmeet

Front-end tools

swup [github/gmrchk] is a flexible, easy-to-use page transition library.

autoComplete.js [github/tarekraafat] is a simple, pure JavaScript library for autocompletion, built to be fast and versatile].

CMS.js [github/chrisdiana] is a client-side JavaScript markdown site generator, along the lines of Jekkyl.

NES.css [bcrikko.github], a NES-style CSS framework.

Scroll Lot of Love

Front-end learning

A short post offering a succinct argument for designing for resilience [csswizardry].

CSS animations in email: transitions and keyframe animations [litmus].

A guide to absolutely understanding CSS position: absolute [medium.freecodecamp].

The current state of styling scrollbars [css-tricks].

Build an interactive infographic with Vue [smashingmagazine].

Government Branches (and Merges)

News/business

The UK Parliament seized a cache of Facebook internal papers that reportedly contain “significant revelations” about decisions that leading up to the Cambridge Analytica scandal [theguardian].

Wikipedia vandals mounted a (temporarily successful) campaign to replace US President Donald Trump’s lead picture with an image of a certain part of the human body [theverge]. It worked so well that Siri displayed the image, and the attack is ongoing.

A Chinese facial recognition system mistook saw a famous CEO running a red light. Except it wasn’t the CEO, it was an ad featuring her face placed on the side of a bus [caixinglobal].

TIL you can change (Washington DC) law with a pull request [arstechnica].

A new study says in the last 20 years, the median wage for workers in Silicon Valley has fallen by 14% [arstechnica].

Brian Krebs explains how to shop online like a security pro [krebsonsecurity].

Put a Spell on Me

Everything else (apps, fun tools, gaming, culture, funny stuff)

Master sleight of hand magician Ricky Jay died over the weekend, aged 72. This is the kind of link I would usually share on a Friday, as a weekend read, but then I read the intro and I couldn’t not share it [newyorker].

The Oatmeal explains, as only the Oatmeal can, how the InSight mission to Mars (happening today) amounts to sending a mole to the red planet [theoatmeal].

Finally, these people have names that break computer systems [bbc]. Reminded me of this McSweeney’s classic: “Email Addresses It Would Be Really Annoying to Give Out Over the Phone” [mcsweeneys].

There you have Versioning (Front-end) for a Monday. I hope it found you well. I’ll be back with the best front-end content I can find on Thursday. Again, you can sign up for the full Versioning newsletter here. If you do, we’ll be looking at back-end development tomorrow, and design/UX on Wednesday.

But until then I’ve taken some inspiration from the late, great Ricky Jay. I’ve dusted off the magician’s cape and plan to head out in search of a dove to enlist into my new act. I’m hoping it knows some card tricks because I always bend them when I try to shuffle. Back in your inbox soon!
